 What Do You Need To Survive?
Hunger, fear, injury, turmoil- it's amazing what people can endure when they must; however, there's a limit.  Every human being needs certain things to survive!

Today's Blog Post: This post will be in response to the following articles/short stories read in class thus far-

*  "Dirk the Protector"
*  Cheating Death on BlueJohn Mountain
*  Trapped on Mountain
*  Explosion in Boston

1. What do these stories have in common?  Do they share an element of Survival of the fittest?
2. What element of survival exists in all of the stories? Do they share a common conflict?
3.  Do all of these stories possess an element of Naturalistic writing even though they are true stories?  Why or why not?

***Write a brief reflection answering the above three questions.  You must cite evidence from the stories listed above in order to support your conclusions.  Write your reflections in the comment section of this post.  You must comment on at least one other student post- using at least (2) of our standard (5) starter responses.

***You must abide by the accepted on-line discussion policy of this class.  ....."Blogging Etiquette!!"

Boston Marathon explosions attract an outpouring of help from city's residents

Click on the title above, and read the story in regard to yesterday's explosion in Boston.  There is a video at the bottom, which was taken at the time of the explosion.  ***Warning- the video is graphic- do not watch the video if you feel it would be too difficult for you to watch.

2.  React to the following quote, which concluded the article

"He's right. There were perhaps one or two evildoers on Monday. And the list of good people goes on and on, growing by the minute, lined up in rows, ready to do anything to help."

3.  Finally, how do you see this event tied to our study of survival?
In any way, would this real-life situation fall under the category of Naturalism?  Why or why not?- make reference to theme, conflict, and naturalistic writing philosophy. Cite specific evidence from the article.

*  theme- determination & survival
*  conflict- struggle for survival- man vs himself / man vs environment/nature
life determined by:  chance, heredity, environment

Tweet out your answers to #2 & #3 in separate tweets-

2.  Common Themes in Naturalistic writing
3.  Three things in which Naturalists believe life is determined
First- watch the Vialogue below and answer the question in the Vialogue comment section.

STEP 2:  Next, read "Cheating Death in Bluejohn Mountain," under the Non-Fiction Article Tab.  When finished with the article, write a blog reflection under the comment section of the non-fiction article tab.  Reflect on the following questions:

a.  What could have prevented this situation from happening?
b.  Was he prepared in your opinion?  Why or Why not?
c.  In any way, would this real-life situation fall under the category of Naturalism?  Why or why not?- make reference to theme, conflict, and naturalistic writing philosophy.

d.  Finally- After you have finished reading the article, write one "BIG" question that you would like other students to reflect on in a Fishbowl.  What should we ponder and discuss?  Write your question in the comment section of the non-fiction article tab, as well....... title - "Big" question.
